Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in De Berry, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis. Whether for drugs or alcohol, we offer hair testing options with facilities across all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. Our tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become part of the drug testing routine in recent years. Many employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict policies, legal institutions, and those on probation. They advantageously detect drug use over an extended period of up to 90 days, with secure collection methods, and are nearly tamper-proof. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective approach for identifying substance and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG extensions or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If there's an absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all remaining hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test result through four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the sample's entrance into a lab's system. This involves confirming the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary swift inspection for drug abuse. Although it's a cost-effective means to exclude most samples from drug use, any positive result needs validation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods conduct Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests resist tampering, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: They reveal a pattern of drug use over time, unlike just indicating recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs need 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", they actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
