Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Deanville, Texas. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol analysis, our testing centers are located in every city across the nation, ready to perform hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or another body area can be sampled. Hair testing identifies drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored analysis options.

Recently, hair follicle drug analysis has become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Many employers, judicial courts, and addiction specialists have shifted towards hair drug screening over traditional urine tests. Employers with non-negotiable drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on parole use this method. A key advantage is its extended drug detection range, up to 90 days, through a monitored collection that is almost impossible to manipulate. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most reliable for recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When hair samples are taken from near the scalp, they can offer a detection range of up to around 90 days for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, altering it is challenging, and it is simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is inapplicable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab-based process of deriving a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s procedures. This phase ensures the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and supplements any missing data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial evaluation for substance misuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal purposes. Samples indicating a potential positive result in Screening necessitate additional verification.

Should a sample show signs of a positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction step. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair, albeit at lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluid, which contributes to the complexity of conducting hair drug screenings.

Verification of any positive findings from Screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each sample with a presumptive positive result is cleansed before proceeding to confirmation when needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is validated under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter duration.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is notably difficult to manipulate a hair drug test's outcome, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical usage: Provides a timeline of drug consumption over time, as opposed to only recent intake.

Challenges:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically more expensive than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the actual test evaluates the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
