In Del Valle, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty lies in hair testing and we provide services across the nation with centers in every city, adept at handling hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized assessments.

Currently, hair follicle drug testing is being adopted more broadly as a method for substance testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation services utilize hair follicle tests for their extended detection window, which spans up to 90 days, observed collection method, and robustness against cheating. However, when detecting drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures long-term use history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This step includes verifying the sample's seal and shipping condition, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for it to be valid in court. Any samples that appear positive at the Screening stage need additional confirmation.

If a sample is positive at Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and processed for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to tamper: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can exhibit a pattern of drug usage over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
