Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Devine, Texas. For those needing hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with nationwide testing facilities capable of conducting such tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is usually required. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often opt for these tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are invaluable for entities with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation cases due to their longer drug detection period of up to 90 days and their nearly impossible-to-tamper nature. Conversely, urine tests remain most effective for drug use detection within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture a prolonged history by embedding biomarkers within the growing fibers. When strands are gathered near the scalp, they can provide a drug and alcohol detection range of around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, tricky to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands, nearest the scalp yields 100mg, considered the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is preferred. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. By head hair, we mean only the scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes checking the sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and updating any missing data not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid drug abuse check. Though Screening is cost-effective to exclude the majority of drug use cases, a positive result requires confirmation for court validation. Samples preliminarily positive during Screening need additional confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive in Screening, further hair is isolated from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drug extraction from hair occurs at a much lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair screening the most challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS confirm any positive screening results. Necessary washing of presumptive positive samples occurs before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the lab process adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair tests resist tampering, enhancing result reliability.
  • Reveals historical usage: Demonstrates a drug usage pattern over time rather than recent intake alone.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair testing generally costs more than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth variability can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
