Located in Dialville, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in hair analysis, we possess testing centers across the nation ready to conduct your hair or alcohol test. Ensure you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body, adaptable in most scenarios. Our hair assessments test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom options.

Hair follicle testing has become a preferred method in recent drug testing approaches. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests over the typical urine tests. These tests cater to zero-tolerance policies, probation requirements, and judicial mandates. The main advantage of hair testing is its extensive 90-day detection span and nearly unbeatable accuracy. For identifying drug use within the last five days, however, urinalysis retains its precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for discovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in its strands, providing an extended history of substance use. When sourced from near the scalp, hair offers up to a nearly 3-month detection timeframe for substances. It's easy to gather, quite resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, the perfect sample for analysis. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is recommended to verify the weight with a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we ONLY mean scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four key processes characterize the laboratory processing of a drug test finding: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample integration into a lab’s framework. This step ensures the sample was packaged and sent correctly, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. While Screening serves as a cost-friendly method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive indication requires verification for legal validity. Any samples that yield presumptive positives during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show positive indications in Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations as opposed to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation for a positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives undergo necessary cleansing before confirmation. The complete laboratory cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection timeframe: Hair tests identify drug consumption up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is extremely hard to falsify a hair test, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It shows a pattern of drug intake over a timeline, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand and not the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
