Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in DISH, Texas. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our team focuses on hair analysis, facilitated by our numerous testing facilities nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically needed from your head or body for testing. Hair samples can reveal drug, alcohol/ETG presence, or be tailored for varied testing options.

In the past few years, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted towards the use of hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now often opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, legal systems, and probation officers. The major advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection time frame for drug usage, lasting up to 90 days, with direct supervision during sample collection, making it nearly foolproof. However, for identifying recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of these substances by encasing biomarkers within the hair's growing strand fibers. By extracting hair near the scalp, it offers an approximate three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp, amounts to 100mg—the preferred quantity for analysis and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional components, or assays exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. Head hair signifies only scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test processing in laboratories includes four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This process confirms proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any absent data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift examination for substance abuse. Although cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage concerns in most samples, a positive screening requires validation to be legally acceptable. Screening-phase presumptive positives necessitate additional confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the specimen for Preparation. In Extraction, the concentration of drugs removed from hair is significantly lower than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenge of hair drug screening methodologies.

Positive screening confirmations employ GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Up to 90 days of drug use detection is possible with hair drug tests, as opposed to urine tests which offer shorter detection spans.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The complexity in evading a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reflects a history of drug consumption over time, instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher expenses than alternative testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Individual factors such as hair color and growth rates influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
