Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Dittlinger, Texas. Whether the test is for drugs or alcohol, our specialty and national presence enable us to administer it consistently across various cities. Generally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. These tests can detect substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG, along with tailored testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and rehabilitation experts often select it over conventional urine tests. Businesses with strict no-drug policies, judicial bodies, and probationers rely on this form due to its extended 90-day detection timeline, making it hard to manipulate, compared to urine tests which remain best for identifying recent 5-day substance use.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol usage, hair testing has gained prominence. By embedding biomarkers within the strands, hair offers a comprehensive history of substance intake. When taken near the scalp, it can reveal use over a span of roughly three months. Collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A standard sample of 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional checks, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is preferred. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, body hair of equivalent mass may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types like facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The drug testing analysis in a laboratory consists of four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning, the first step, integrates a sample into the laboratory’s database. This procedure ensures the sample is securely sealed, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputs any necessary data absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening provides an initial, swift evaluation for drug presence. While cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, any positive result must be verified for legal acceptability. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the specimen is used in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated at significantly lower concentrations than with alternate methods like urine or oral fluids, underscoring the intricate nature of hair drug testing.

For any positive findings, Confirmation is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, any samples testing positive are cleansed as required. The end-to-end process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to standards laid out by CAP (College of American Pathologists) for Hair testing and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use for nearly 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter period.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating hair drug tests is exceptionally challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers longitudinal insights: It delineates a long-term pattern of drug use, not just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent intake: Drugs generally become traceable in hair within 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other testing options.
  • Result disparities: Elements like hair pigment and individual growth variation can alter metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand above the scalp, not the follicle underneath.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
