Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Eagle Mountain, Texas. Specializing in hair drug or alcohol tests, our centers nationwide are equipped to handle these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for analysis. Hair tests can be adapted to detect various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has become the preferred method by many in recent years. Businesses, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts frequently favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Its advantage lies in detecting drug use for up to 90 days, is overseen, and difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests retain accuracy for detecting very recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized for its effectiveness in identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair strands offer a long-term record of substance use, capturing indicators within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a span of roughly 3 months. It is easy to collect hair samples, challenging to tamper with them, and straightforward to send them for testing.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches, with around 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest measuring the sample weight using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of drug test results comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with incorporating a sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift check for substances of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption in most specimens, any positive outcomes need to be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that are deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction process. Here, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening results is done utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples that test presumptively positive are cleaned prior to Confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection spans.
  • Cheating resistance: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It reveals a timeline of drug usage over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair tests.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," these tests actually examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
