Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Earth, Texas. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair assessments, with facilities in all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair examination. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be tested. The analysis options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair evaluations.

Lately, drug testing strategies increasingly utilize hair follicle screenings. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now mandate hair drug assessments instead of standard urine examinations. Hair follicle tests are employed by organizations with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probationers. The standout feature of hair follicle tests is a longer drug detection timeframe, around 90 days, conducted under observation, and is notably challenging to tamper with. Yet, for detecting recent drug usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Seen as an effective methodology, hair testing aids in the discovery of alcohol and drug consumption. By integrating biomarkers in the hair strand's fibers, hair maintains a prolonged log of drug use. When harvested near the scalp, it can reveal usage of alcohol and drugs for up to roughly 3 months. It’s straightforward to acquire, less prone to tampering, and convenient to dispatch.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil width) nearest to the scalp, delivers 100mg of hair which is optimal for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is beneficial to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be present, a comparable amount of body hair suffices. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair comprises all other kinds (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test is categorized into four significant procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data not included in the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary, swift assessment for substance abuse. Although cost-effective in negating drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court acceptance. Screening results suggesting positivity undergo further verification.

Should a sample suggest positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prepare for Extraction. At this step, drugs are extracted from the hair at concentrations far lower than other methodologies (urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Positive screening confirmations are conducted utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washes before confirmation. Both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards oversee the complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a more limited timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: A hair drug evaluation is notably hard to manipulate, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Historic usage data: It can illustrate drug use patterns over time, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Limited recent usage detection: Drugs become discernible in hair approximately after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically incur more costs than other testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand rather than the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Earth, TX

  • Hair testing offers superior detection over traditional urine exams, and identifies drug use over extended periods.
  • This method provides more reliable results, reducing the chances of manipulation compared to urine tests.
  • Employers gain confidence in their workforce management with this more accurate and robust testing option.

This makes hair testing a preferred choice for employers seeking thorough assessments of their employees’ commitment to a substance-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
