In East Bell, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough services for hair follicle drug evaluations. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our centers, available nationwide, cater specifically to hair assessments. Ideally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair either from your head or body. Hair exams reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing needs.

There is a growing preference for hair follicle drug tests in recent years. Various entities like employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Businesses with rigorous drug-free mandates, legal bodies, and probation programs often opt for these exams. Hair tests are valued for their ability to detect substances used over 90 days, collected under direct supervision and are difficult to falsify. Yet, urine tests remain superior for identifying recent drug use within a few days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly perceived as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present roughly a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, moderately hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable quantity of body hair might be gathered. When speaking of head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This encompasses confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any extra data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial prompt evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates affirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening do necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to deceive: It is remarkably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can furnish a pattern of drug usage over an extended timeframe, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
