Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Edith, Texas. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available throughout the nation. A minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is generally required. Such tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing practices have increasingly leaned towards hair follicle tests. These are now fundamental for many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts instead of traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance policies among employers, judicial mandates, and probation prerequisites often demand hair testing, mainly due to its extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, secured under observation and offering substantial resistance to falsification. Nonetheless, for detecting very recent drug use within five days, urine tests retain their precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides chronic information on alcohol and other drugs as it encases biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we specifically indicate scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair sorts (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure of processing a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary handling of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This comprises ensuring that the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any other data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a primary rapid assessment for abusive drug presence. Although Screening is an economic method to dismiss drug consumption in most cases, a positive outcome requires verification to stand in legal settings. Any samples that show presumptive positivity during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are separated from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging technique to conduct.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleaned before confirmation as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments which have a briefer detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It's exceedingly challenging to alter a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insights: It illustrates a pattern of drug consumption over a timeframe, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Can't reveal recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are mostly pricier compared to other drug assessment methods.
  • Result variabilities: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
