In Elsa, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Expert in hair testing, they offer tests across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored options.

More frequently, drug tests now include hair follicle methods. Employers, courts, and substance professionals favor this over urine tests. Hair tests benefit zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers, offering a 90-day detection window, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain precise within five days of usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The growing hair strand captures biomarkers that reveal a long-term record of alcohol and drugs used. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can reveal a detection window of about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment composed of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. It is wise to measure the hair using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable mass of body hair can be collected. When talking about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair applies to any other type of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into the laboratory’s protocol. This step involves ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing information not captured by an electronic custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for illicit drug usage. While it is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug use for the majority of specimens, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be accepted legally. Samples that appear positive in Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is suspected to be positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that potentially test positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterion and according to ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: A hair drug test is quite difficult to falsify, ensuring more precise results.
  • Shows historical patterns: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair coloration and differences in individual hair growth may impact the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: This procedure is often called a "hair follicle test", though the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Elsa, TX triumphs over traditional urine tests by offering unparalleled detection accuracy. With the ability to trace substances over longer periods, hair tests present a more robust overview, making them a superior choice for organizations aiming to enforce stringent drug policies.

Reliability stands out as a hallmark of hair follicle testing. Unlike urine tests, which might be compromised or affected by temporary abstinence, hair analysis delivers a thorough profile of an individual's substance use history, ensuring that no details are overlooked or misrepresented.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing, valuable to employers in Elsa, TX, offers insight into substance use over the past 90 days. This comprehensive timeframe allows for a more informed decision when evaluating potential hires or current employees.

With its ability to cover such a significant period, hair testing surpasses short-term alternatives. Employers gain a distinct advantage with this method, providing peace of mind through its detailed overview of substance misuse history, ensuring workplace integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing significantly reduces the risks of tampering in Elsa, TX. Unlike urine tests, which are susceptible to adulteration, the hair sample method is highly secure, offering reliable results that can stand up to scrutiny.

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing ensures that employers and courts receive unquestionable results. This integrity is vital for maintaining the credibility of drug-free policies and enforcing disciplinary measures when necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
