Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle substance testing services in Encino, Texas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair assessments, with facilities in every city across the nation capable of conducting hair analyses. Most often, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body must be available. Hair evaluations can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke options.

In recent times, the utilization of hair follicle drug tests for substance screening has become more commonplace. Various employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair assessments over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by firms with strict anti-drug policies, legal institutions, and those on probation. The key advantage is a significantly extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, conducted under supervision and rendering it almost impossible to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, the urine test remains the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to 90 days. The collection process is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis. For EtG add-ons and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be acquired. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process involves these four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is incorporated into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Despite its effectiveness and cost-efficiency in ruling out drug presence in most cases, a positive screening needs further verification to hold up in court. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

In case of a presumptive positive result at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, which makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging procedures.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, meets the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating the results of a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent usage: It typically requires 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing types.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variability can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
