In Evant, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities nationwide to accommodate. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained popularity for drug examinations. Many businesses, legal entities, and substance abuse experts opt for this method over urine testing. It's favored by those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies. Hair tests are preferred for a longer detection timeframe—up to 90 days—and are rigorously observed, making them hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain best for detecting recent drug usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained acceptance as a potent resource for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an elongated timeline of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the roots, hair can provide a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) near the root will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or those surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial registration of a sample in a lab’s database. This step signifies ensuring that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, appointing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as an economical approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in a legal context. Any samples that appear positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If an initial screening suggests a positive result, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening comes via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to compromise, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical recording: It can indicate a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth might influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
