In Fairchilds, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers full-spectrum hair follicle testing, a leading solution for drug and alcohol detection. Specializing in this advanced method, our nationwide centers are equipped to conduct hair tests efficiently. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, this approach can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has increasingly supplanted traditional methods like urine tests. Demanded by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists, this test appeals to those enforcing zero-tolerance policies. Its primary advantage lies in an extended detection window of up to 90 days, secured through observed collections and nearly invulnerable to tampering. However, for recent consumption over the past 5 days, urine tests maintain superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers, offering an extended history of substance usage as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair allows for a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, posing challenges to tampering, and is easily transportable.

By obtaining a 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, one achieves 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to gather 150mg of the sample. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair categories (including facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory assessment of drug test outcomes consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s database, which includes confirming that the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical method to rule out drug presence in most specimens, a positive result must be corroborated for legal acceptability. Any specimens yielding a presumptive positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern across an extended duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variations such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite common reference as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Fairchilds, TX, hair follicle testing is increasingly favored over traditional urine tests. The significant advantage of hair testing is its superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests primarily capture recent use, hair testing comprehensively reveals substance use over a longer period, ensuring a more complete understanding of individual habits.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Fairchilds, TX recognize the value of hair follicle testing due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days. By examining past substance use over a prolonged period, this method offers an extensive history of an individual’s drug use patterns.
This comprehensive approach enables employers to make informed decisions based on detailed insights into an applicant's or employee's substance history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing in Fairchilds, TX significantly reduces any risk of sample adulteration. Unlike other methods, it is virtually impossible to manipulate the process, ensuring the integrity of each test.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
