Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examination services in Farmers Branch, Texas. If you require a hair or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, and testing centers are available in all cities across the nation to execute these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods frequently incorporate hair follicle examinations. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies. Their main advantage is a significantly longer detection window of up to 90 days, acquired in an observed setting, making them hard to tamper with. For drug use detection within the last 5 days, however, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by locking biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When hair is taken near the scalp, it offers a detection period of approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it is easily shippable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a corresponding amount of body hair is acceptable. Reference to head hair specifically means scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four core stages in processing a lab drug test result are: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves preliminary processing of a sample in a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it is an economical method to rule out drug use for most samples, a confirmed screen is required for legal acceptance. Samples indicating a positive result during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, a subsequent portion of hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction step. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any initial positive result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The lab procedures from Accessioning to Confirmation are scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can disclose drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a reduced detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are very resistant to deception, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical analysis: They can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Detection delay: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
