Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests throughout Fate, Texas. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers across all U.S. cities equipped to conduct hair tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown or body, which can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle tests have become a common method in drug screening. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer these over typical urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary, and those on probation. Their principal advantage is their extensive drug use detection window—extending up to 90 days—observed during collection, and nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for detecting usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a robust method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. It offers a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can provide a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (with a diameter similar to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, equates to 100mg, which is the optimum for both screening and confirmation. For tests requiring EtG, additional analysis, or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of hair is advisable. It is recommended to use a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentions are made of head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, confirmatory measures are required for positive screens to hold up in legal settings. Any sample that initially tests positive in Screening must have secondary confirmation.

For samples that test positive initially during the Screening process, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is among the hardest methodologies to execute.

Positive results from initial screenings are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples may be washed. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: Provides an extended view of substance use patterns, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: The detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variations such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Fate, TX: Hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests in both detection accuracy and dependability. This method reveals a broader detection window, whereas urine tests are limited to a shorter timeframe, making hair analysis a superior choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
