Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests across First Colony, Texas. If your requirement is for a hair or alcohol drug test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in such tests. We operate testing facilities nationwide and can conduct hair analysis. Typically, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head crown or body suffice. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG or other customizable options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse Experts often prefer hair tests over urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests cater to employers with no drug use policies, court systems, and those on probation. A significant advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window for up to around three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar volume of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other varieties (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The sequence of steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of the sample into a lab's system. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conduct an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient technique to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in courtroom settings. Any samples that show a preliminary positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Whenever a sample exhibits a tentative positive in the Screening stage, extra hair is drawn from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other procedures (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for hair drug screening being the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked as presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, contrasted with urine tests which present a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical context: It can delineate a trend of drug usage over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug test methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In First Colony, TX, hair follicle tests outperform traditional urine tests, providing superior detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair testing can uncover a longer drug use history, making it invaluable for identifying consistent patterns.

Employers can rely on hair testing for more reliable outcomes, reducing chances of false negatives and increasing substance use deterrence, ensuring a more drug-free workplace environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in First Colony, TX have an extensive detection window of up to 90 days, providing a thorough review of drug use history. This period allows employers to gain insights beyond the short window offered by urine tests.

This extensive window offers a more comprehensive overview of an applicant's or employee's substance history, aiding in making informed hiring or policy decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
