Based in Fischer, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair tests for both drugs and alcohol, their network spans all major US cities. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body is required for testing. Hair analyses can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Over recent years, the hair follicle drug test has become a more favored method for drug testing. It’s now the preferred choice for various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests, ideal for zero-tolerance policies, probation cases, and court orders, are known for a longer detection span of up to 90 days, supervised collection, and resistance to fraud. However, urine testing remains best for detecting immediate drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged timeline of substance usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When taken near the scalp, hair offers roughly a three-month detection period for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other hair categories (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four critical phases in laboratory analysis of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary processing of a specimen into the laboratory’s system, which involves confirming the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, swift check for drug abuse. While it's a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most specimens, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that appear positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or saliva), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed to be positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical overview: It provides information about drug usage patterns over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: Drugs take around 5-7 days before being detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
