Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Florence, Texas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with facilities available in every city across the Nation to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body are necessary for the test. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle tests in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine method. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict anti-drug use policies, legal bodies, and individuals under probation. Their significant advantage lies in detecting drug use up to 90 days, using a monitored collection process that is difficult to tamper with. For drug detection within the recent five-day window, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of drug and alcohol consumption due to the integration of biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. Collected close to the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a period extending up to three months. The collection process is straightforward, with the added benefits of being challenging to tamper with and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is an optimal amount for both initial screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is unattainable, an equal quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a laboratory drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage, where the sample is processed into the laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs further confirmation to be valid for legal proceedings. Any samples that indicate a presumptive positive in the Screening phase must undergo secondary confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underlining why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples may be washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, which is significantly longer than the detection window of urine tests.
  • High accuracy: It is notably challenging to alter the outcome of a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides use patterns: This test reveals drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs can be detected in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
