Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Fostoria, Texas. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and operate testing centers nationwide. A requisite is having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or from the body for testing in most cases. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol, or be tailored for other specific analyses.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become the preferred method of drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over the standard urine tests. Especially favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, obtained through an observed process, making it almost foolproof to tamper with. Yet, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the optimal choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is perceived as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It provides a historical view of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. Hair samples taken close to the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug usage for up to three months. The collection process is straightforward, with limited potential for tampering and ease of transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and validation. For tests that include EtG, additional analyses, or exceed 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. A jeweler’s scale is advised for weighing the sample. In absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Scalp hair references solely head hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is systematically integrated into the lab’s system, involving the verification of its proper sealing and shipment, the assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary manual data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary analysis for drug abuse. While a cost-effective measure for initially ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive cases during Screening necessitate further verification.

In instances of presumptive positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at significantly reduced concentrations than other methods such as urine or oral fluids, making hair drug testing the most challenging to conduct.

Positive results from the screening process are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo a wash before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Traces usage patterns: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, rather than recent activity alone.

Limitations:

  • Does not indicate recent usage: Detection takes approximately 5-7 days post use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
