Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screenings in Fowlkes, Texas. If a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment is needed, we specialize in this method, with test centers across all U.S. cities that conduct these analyses. Hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is typically required. Tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options for hair testing.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a common method for screenings. These tests are now often used by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals instead of standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and some individuals on probation prefer this method due to its longer detection window—up to 90 days—and its observed collection process, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests are still best for detecting very recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The long-term record provided by hair encapsulates biomarkers within its strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can detect substances such as alcohol for a period reaching up to three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is straightforward.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp yields a sample of 100mg, which is optimal for evaluation and validation. For testing like EtG or panels exceeding ten, it is advisable to have 150mg of hair. Measuring the sample's weight on a jeweler’s scale is advisable. If there's no scalp hair, equivalent body hair may be utilized. References to head hair strictly pertain to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process comprises four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing in the lab’s system, including confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary, economical test for drugs, effectively ruling out usage in many cases; however, positive results require confirmation for legal purposes. Samples with positive presumptions in Screening necessitate further validation.

Presumptively positive samples from Screening are further processed in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than methodologies like urine or oral fluid, thus making hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation for positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Necessary washing of presumptive positives precedes confirmation. The laboratory process is audited from Accessioning to Confirmation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can sense drug use for up to 90 days, opposed to urine tests with shorter timeframes.
  • Highly tamper-resistant: Cheating a hair drug test is highly unlikely, enhancing accuracy.
  • Tracks historical use: Offers a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Approximate time for detectability of drugs in hair is 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier than other types.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth rate can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these actually evaluate the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
