Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Frost, Texas. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair testing and boast testing facilities in all cities across the country, capable of conducting hair tests. Most cases necessitate 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been favored as a drug screening method. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer this over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers find hair tests beneficial. The key advantage is its extended detection period for drugs, usually up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that's hard to manipulate. However, for recent drug use detection (within 5 days), urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair offers around a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar volume of body hair can be used. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initial sample processing into a lab's system, including checking the sample's seal and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick check for drugs. While Screening effectively rules out drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction, where drugs are recovered from hair in much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It displays drug use patterns over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Results variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Frost, TX outshines urine tests in various aspects. Accuracy and reliability are key advantages, as hair samples effectively reveal drug use history over an extended period. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
