Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fullerville, Texas. We specialize in hair testing nationwide, and if you need a hair drug or alcohol test, we have locations in every city that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly integrated hair follicle drug tests. These tests are often preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services widely use hair drug tests. They offer a longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, collected under observation to limit tampering. Yet, for identifying drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair that is growing. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and effortless to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equals 100mg, which is the perfect amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning addresses the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data requirements not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves carrying out an initial examination for drugs of abuse. Screening proves to be a cost-effective procedure to eliminate drug usage for most samples, but a positive screening needs verification to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a specimen shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing presents the most complicated methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result in screening is realized using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, any presumptive positive samples undergo washing. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Minimized cheating risks: Hair drug tests present a high challenge for cheating, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
