Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Fulshear, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is required, our expertise lies in hair testing, accessible through centers across all cities in the Nation. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body. Hair testing caters to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug analysis. Various employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug strategies, courts, and probationers favor hair follicle testing due to its extended detection reach, typically up to 90 days, through an observed and almost uncheatable collection process. Nonetheless, for recent 5-day drug use, urine tests remain accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can record an extended timeline of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they develop. When obtained near the scalp, it can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drug use. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches long consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the preferred amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair indicate scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result consists of four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This involves confirming the correct sealing and shipment of the sample, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any remaining data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial, expedited check for drug use. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive screening must be verified for court acceptability. All samples with a preliminary positive in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample display a preliminary positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are more meticulously extracted from hair compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, marking hair drug screening as the most challenging technique to execute.

All positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that test presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Difficult to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly tough, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers trend data: It reveals a timeline of drug use, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Known as "hair follicle tests", yet the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Excels Over Urine Tests in Fulshear, TX

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
