Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive hair follicle drug testing service in Garwood, Texas. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and operates testing facilities across the country, capable of conducting these tests. Typically, hair from the crown, ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches, is required, with body hair as a substitute. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to customized testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing practices have increasingly employed hair follicle drug tests. A shift towards hair testing from conventional urine tests has been observed, especially among employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation officers prefer hair follicle tests due to their longer detection span, reaching up to 90 days, secure collection process, and high resistance to manipulation. Urine tests, however, remain preferable for recent drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as an effective means for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a period of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering with it is relatively challenging, and it can be readily shipped.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (nearly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, an identical amount of body hair might be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This procedure includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening denotes a preliminary swift check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample indicates presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis a more complex task.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation operates under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection timeline.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers retrospective data: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
