Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening in Geronimo, Texas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with numerous centers nationwide performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are necessary. Our analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Recently, conducting drug tests has increasingly included hair follicle testing. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts ask for this test rather than the usual urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation services utilize hair follicle tests due to their longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, observed collection process, and their resistance to tampering. Conversely, for recent, within 5 days drug usage, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective measure for detecting use of drugs and alcohol. It offers a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the hair strand's growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can present roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, moderately hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, the optimum sample for testing and verification. For EtG, extra panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair not be attainable, the same amount of body hair is an option. For head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four essential steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the sample's initial processing into a lab’s system. This task includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and shipped accurately, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that an electronic chain of custody system hasn't provided.

Screening offers an initial swift evaluation for substances. Despite Screening being an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result demands confirmation for courtroom acceptance. Any samples that preliminarily test positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are withdrawn from hair at concentrations considerably lower than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is carried out with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug screenings can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine screenings have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: It's particularly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Offers past data: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over a duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become recognizable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are typically costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug substances in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
