In Gober, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug and alcohol testing. With Nationwide testing centers, our specialty in hair testing ensures that, whether on the head or body, samples of 1.5 to 2 inches can be tested. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options to suit your needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more popular choice for drug screening. These tests, favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers, offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are collected in a supervised manner, reducing the possibility of tampering, which makes them highly reliable yet less suitable for detecting drug activity within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely regarded as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When acquired close to the scalp, hair analysis can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a period of up to three months. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Securing a 1.5-inch lock of about 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and verification. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. Employing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If hair from the scalp is inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. The term "head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal phases in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory’s database. This process verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial preliminary assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method for identifying drug use in most samples, a positive finding requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that produce a presumptive positive result during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drug compounds are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive outcome from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Yields historical data: It can showcase a pattern of substance use over a period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Substances become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being labeled "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Gober, TX, hair follicle testing stands as a superior alternative to traditional urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
