Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Golden, Texas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in these tests, with centers across all cities Nationwide able to conduct a hair test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair at the crown of your head, though body hair can also suffice. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a preferred method. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and specialists in Substance Abuse are opting for this over the conventional urine test. It is widely used by employers maintaining zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers. The pivotal advantage is its extended detection cut-off of up to 90 days, collected in an observable manner, making it extremely hard to manipulate. Conversely, for drug use reported within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the benchmark for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable tool in detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of the continuously growing hair strand. When retrieved close to the scalp, it can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results comprises four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in a legal context. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening thus necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a result is presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing stands as the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any presumed positive Screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as presumptively positive are washed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate hair drug tests, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage patterns: It provides an overview of drug usage over a duration, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination scrutinizes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers notable advantages over traditional urine tests in Golden, TX. The benefits include superior detection accuracy and dependability, making it a favored choice for many.

In the competition between hair and urine tests, the former provides comprehensive and reliable results, allowing detection of drug use over an extended period, hence its growing preference in Golden, TX.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
