Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Goldsmith, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is skilled in hair testing, and our testing facilities are present nationwide for conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be tested. Analyses can be done for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized hair testing.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become a common method for drug detection. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor a hair drug test over a urine test. Hair tests benefit zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation individuals due to their longer detection period of up to 90 days with difficult-to-tamper conditions. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a comprehensive record of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair analysis can reveal up to a 3-month period of alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and can be easily transported.

A 1.5-inch segment composed of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a sample weight of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent quantity of body hair may serve as a substitute. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of drug tests comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into a laboratory's framework. This process involves confirming the sample's secure sealing and appropriate shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input not included through an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening process serves as a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Screening is cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive results from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to verification as required. The comprehensive laboratory assessment from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It reveals drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair over urine testing? Hair follicle testing beats urine testing by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability in Goldsmith, TX. While urine tests might miss recent substance use, hair tests capture a broader history, verifying months of drug activity. This method outshines traditional testing by avoiding manipulations and delivering consistent, accurate findings.

The advances in hair follicle testing have rendered it more advantageous than urine tests. Its accuracy is significantly heightened due to the inability to manipulate samples. As a result, stakeholders such as employers and courts now choose hair tests for their trustworthy results, adapting to a more comprehensive evaluation of an individual’s substance history.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing gives employers a detailed account of an individual's substance use. In Goldsmith, TX, this method unveils drug usage up to 90 days back, surpassing traditional tests by covering much longer periods. This extensive overview aids employers in making informed decisions regarding hiring or ongoing employee assessments.

Hair testing’s ability to track drug use over several months, rather than days, offers valuable insights into an applicant's or employee’s lifestyle choices. This broad window of detection provides a comprehensive look at patterns of substance use, making it beneficial for ongoing evaluation and ensuring workplace safety and integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are a tamper-resistant testing method. In Goldsmith, TX, these tests minimize the risk of sample alteration, ensuring results are both trustworthy and credible. Its resistance to tampering derives from using hair samples, which are challenging to adulterate, compared to easily manipulated urine samples, providing stakeholders with peace of mind.

The robust nature of hair testing safeguards against potential sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests, where tampering is possible, hair follicle tests offer a sound scientific basis for reliable and irrefutable outcomes, upholding the integrity of the testing process and reinforcing the validity of the results obtained.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
