Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Goliad, Texas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair testing can reveal substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for screening. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists now opt for hair drug analysis over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle tests benefit employers with strict drug-free workplace policies, courts, and probation officers due to a detection window extending up to 90 days, with an observed collection, and nearly zero chance of tampering. Nonetheless, for drug testing within a recent 5-day period, urine tests remain accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can record a long-term history of substances by capturing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over an estimated 3-month timeline. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for analysis. For EtG, additional checks, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory drug testing involves Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation as the four primary steps.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample enters a lab's system. This phase verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not handled by an electronic system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While cost-effective and useful for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed to hold up in court. Samples that are presumptively positive during screening require further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, substances are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging process.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is very difficult to cheat a hair drug test, making the results more accurate.
  • Provides historical data: It can provide a pattern of drug use over a period of time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
