Accredited Drug Testing offers full-scale hair follicle drug screening services in Goodrich, Texas. Whether you require drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, our specialization in this area allows us to provide efficient service at various centers across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body suffices for these tests. Hair analysis can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific requirements.

Recently, there has been an increase in utilizing hair follicle drug tests as a preferred method for substance screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors are now opting for hair tests over the traditional urine samples. Organizations with strict no-drug-use policies, as well as legal authorities and probationers, find hair testing advantageous. Its primary benefit lies in the extended detection window, which spans up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, minimizing chances of evasion. However, for detecting drug usage within the past 5 days, urine still remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates alcohol and other drug biomarkers within the growing strand, providing a historical record. When gathered close to the scalp, it offers a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for screening and confirmation procedures. For additional tests like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Use a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory handling of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This stage ensures that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and finalizes any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment to identify drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to disqualify drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples possibly positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample be deemed presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations notably lower than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any screening results indicating positivity is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: A hair drug test is notably hard to compromise, ensuring greater accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: Capable of showing a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs need about 5-7 days to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
