Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Goree, Texas. Should you require a drug or alcohol analysis via hair sample, we are experts in this method and have facilities across all cities in the nation ready to perform it. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required for most tests. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored analysis.

In recent times, utilizing a hair follicle drug test has become more common in drug testing processes. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer this over the typical urine test. Zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary, and probationary cases utilize these tests. A hair follicle drug test provides an extended detection window up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision, making it nearly impervious to tampering. However, for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a potent means to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and other drug exposure by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hairs (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is recommended to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps involved in the laboratory processing of a drug testing result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid review for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal acceptance. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily positive are prepped by washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Delivers historical patterns: It offers insight into a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Detectability in hair takes about 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Varied outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations may affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests," the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
