In Grandfalls, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether for drug or alcohol detection, our expertise in hair testing is supported by centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head crown or body, is sufficient. Hair tests provide analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug screening recently. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer these tests over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation utilize them due to their extended detection window, up to 90 days, and their highly reliable and tamper-proof nature. However, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol activity by capturing biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When collected near the scalp, the hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to about three months. It is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (matching the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which serves as the perfect amount for examination and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing in labs follows four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab's framework. It ensures the sample's proper sealing and transportation, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid evaluation for substance misuse. Despite being economical in ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive outcome in screening necessitates a confirmation to be valid legally. Any screening results that are presumptive positive require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original collection for the Extraction phase. During this phase, substances are separated from the hair at concentrations significantly less than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine exams have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug assessments are significantly hard to tamper with, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage trends: It can showcase a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent activities: Drugs typically become identifiable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Outcome fluctuations: Aspects such as hair color and individual growth variations can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although popularly termed as "hair follicle tests," the test focuses on analyzing the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
