Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests in Granger, Texas. Whether it's a drug or alcohol test, we are your expert service for hair testing. With labs across all cities nationwide, we handle these tests efficiently. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is required for a comprehensive analysis of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle exams. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and people on probation. Their chief advantage lies in detecting drug use over a longer duration—up to 90 days—with a supervised collection that's hard to alter. However, for detection within five days, urine tests remain the most precise tool.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations are now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and various drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair filament. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a three-month observation period for alcohol and drug usage. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample weight for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. Where scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair refers broadly to other types such as facial and underarm hair, and so forth.

Process Overview

The primary four stages in laboratory processing for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning centers on the initial processing of a sample n a laboratory's framework, encompassing verification of properly sealed and dispatched samples, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalization of any additional data recording absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift test for drug misuse. While Screening affords a cost-effective method to negate drug use in the majority of samples, positive screening results necessitate confirmation for court acceptance. All samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening mandate a further confirmatory test.

Upon a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to administer.

Should a positive result arise in screening, Confirmation is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before final verification if necessary. The complete lab routine from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that possess a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring enhanced result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It tracks a sequence of drug use over time, not confined to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: A timeframe of about 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
