Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Granite Shoals, Texas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair analysis with testing locations across the country ready to administer these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from your head or body. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific test needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a standard method for many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, replacing traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services due to their extensive drug use detection period of up to 90 days. With its observed collection, it is very challenging to deceive. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimum amount for testing and validating. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be obtained. When referring to head hair, it denotes only scalp hair. Body hair implies all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The fundamental steps involved in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial organization of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This process involves verifying that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screening warrants confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples that show preliminary positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

If a sample indicates a preliminary positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other procedures (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug evaluation is considered the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceedingly hard to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It can depict a pattern of drug utilization over a period, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
