In Hamlin, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments. Whether it's for drug or alcohol testing, our centers across the nation, including all cities, are equipped to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol (ETG), or can be customized for other needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have recently gained popularity for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and abuse specialists often prefer this over urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and individuals on probation rely on it. The main advantage is its long-term detection window of up to 90 days, with observed sample collection, making it difficult to falsify. However, when recent use within 5 days is a concern, the urine test remains highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of drug and alcohol use by integrating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and other drug usage for up to around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both initial screening and further confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result comprises four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning represents the initial step of processing a sample into the lab's workflow. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional information entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for the presence of drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a budget-friendly means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening must be verified to be valid in legal situations. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and then readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to perform.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required before confirmation. The full laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screening can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine screenings, which have a shorter detection window.
  • High resistance to tampering: It is quite difficult to alter the results of a hair drug test, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides longitudinal data: It offers insights into a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: Drugs need around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers a distinct advantage over urine tests in Hamlin, TX. Its long-term drug detection capability makes it ideal for comprehensive substance use evaluations. Traditional urine tests may miss recent use, but hair tests provide an extended detection window, ensuring reliable assessments. This makes hair testing a preferred choice, especially when accuracy and detection history are crucial.

Extended Detection Window

Hamlin, TX employers appreciate the extended detection window of 90 days that hair follicle testing provides. This comprehensive window offers an insightful look into an individual's substance use history, proving invaluable when making employment decisions. Unlike shorter-term tests, hair testing reveals consistent patterns of use, aiding in a thorough assessment of an applicant's past behavior.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Hamlin, TX, hair follicle testing is revered for its tamper-resistant nature. The process minimizes the risk of sample adulteration, providing assured and reliable results. The difficulty in manipulating hair samples translates into credible outcomes, ensuring the integrity of the testing process and the validity of results.
Thus, making it a trusted choice in sensitive drug testing scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
