Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Happy, Texas. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol tests, our expertise lies in hair assessments with nationwide centers fully equipped to offer this service. Typically, hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown, or body hair, are necessary. Such tests can examine for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized test configurations.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly feature hair follicle evaluations. More employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals prioritize hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationers often rely on these tests. Key advantages include a detection span of up to 90 days, reliability of observed sample collection, and resistance to sample tampering. However, for use within the previous five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has been recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use. The hair fiber captures and retains biomarkers, offering a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol consumption. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Its collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it ships effortlessly.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is optimal for screening and validation. For EtG, extended panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 categories, 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In situations where scalp hair is missing, a similar quantity of body hair might be gathered. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory analysis of drug testing outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial process of entering a sample into a lab's system, which includes ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Screening effectively excludes drug usage in most samples; however, a positive screen must be validated for courtroom acceptability. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening need additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial collection for the Extraction procedure. During Extraction, substances are retrieved from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is notably complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleaned before confirmation, as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of 90 days, whereas urine tests have a narrower timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is quite difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a trend of drug use over time, not only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires 5-7 days for substances to become evident in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
