Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Harrold, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is required, we specialize in these tests and have centers nationwide capable of conducting them. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is typically needed. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers favor hair follicle tests. The main advantage is extended drug detection of up to 90 days, with observed collection that minimizes tampering risks. However, for drugs taken within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch strand of around 200 hairs (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. When talking about head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any extra data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive result needs validation to be considered in legal settings. Samples that indicate presumptive positivity in Screening require secondary validation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are more delicately extracted from hair compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most intricate method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed pre-verification as required. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Verification is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to evade: It is notably difficult to evade a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers detailed usage data: It can depict a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Results variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
