Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hays, Texas. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair analysis with testing facilities in every city across the country capable of conducting hair tests. To proceed, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or certain body areas is needed. Hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailor-made testing solutions.

Recently, the practice of drug testing increasingly incorporates hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse advisors now prefer hair testing over routine urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are utilized by employers with strict anti-drug regulations, judiciary systems, and individuals on parole. The significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection capability, typically reaching up to 90 days and conducted under supervision, making it nearly foolproof. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its fibers, offering a prolonged record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can detect drugs and alcohol for roughly a three-month period. The collection process for hair is straightforward, with minimal likelihood of tampering, and it can be conveniently shipped.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, suitable for both screening and confirmation. For EtG evaluations, additional testing, or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equal quantity of body hair might be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory analysis of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step in which a sample is initially processed within a lab's system. This process includes ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry that wasn't captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for potential drug abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in numerous samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be legally admissible. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in the Extraction phase. Drugs are then extracted from the hair, at lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is a challenging process.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing positive are cleaned before Confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, falls under review by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Harder to manipulate: The difficulty in circumventing a hair drug test contributes to its result's accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Hair drug tests outline a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Individual factors like hair color and growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
