Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Henrietta, Texas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities in all cities Nationwide ready to conduct a test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly adopted in drug testing procedures. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for a hair drug test over a typical urine test. Hair follicle tests serve those with strict drug-use policies, individuals on probation, and in legal proceedings. These tests offer a significant benefit with up to a 90-day detection window, using an observed collection that's challenging to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers that reveal drug and alcohol usage over extended periods. When collected close to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other drugs. This method of collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp gives 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers only to scalp hair, and "body hair" covers all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four crucial stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's workflow. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive at the screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This involves extracting drugs at lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening one of the most intricate methodologies.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. A complete review of the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is carried out under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, thus producing more reliable results.
  • Tracks usage history: It provides a timeline of drug usage, indicating patterns rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug-testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
