Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Hidalgo, Texas. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing, with centers in all cities across the nation equipped to conduct hair tests. Generally, needing 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, these tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer bespoke hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly complemented traditional testing methods. This approach is often mandated by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists in lieu of routine urine analyses. Organizations with strict drug policies, juridical bodies, and probation programs benefit from this method due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days and supervised collection which greatly minimizes cheating, although urine tests remain unrivaled for detecting very recent usage, typically within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an up to 90-day detection range for substances and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hairs (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. For head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory system. This process entails verifying the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening features an initial rapid check for abuse substances. Although Screening effectively rules out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair in much smaller concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging process to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a briefer window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can exhibit a pattern of drug utilization over time instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It generally takes around 5-7 days for substances to be visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are predominantly costlier compared to other testing modalities.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair tone and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
