Accredited Drug Testing in High Island, Texas, offers full-spectrum hair follicle tests for drug and alcohol detection. Our specialty is hair testing, and with centers nationwide, we ensure everyone receives top-notch service. To qualify for testing, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your crown or body. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized options.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle testing for drug screening has risen. Unlike conventional urine tests, many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests. These tests help enforce zero-tolerance policies in workplaces and legal contexts due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests are still the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a historical record by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal usage of alcohol and drugs for a period of up to roughly 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is preferable. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If no scalp hair is accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. The term 'head hair' strictly refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial sample integration into a lab system. This step involves ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for illegal drugs. While Screening is an efficient way to dismiss drug use in most cases, any positive result must be verified to be legally valid. Samples with a presumed positive result during Screening need a further confirmation process.

For any presumed positive sample in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original sample for further Extraction. In this phase, drug compounds are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcomes is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory method from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days ago, in contrast to urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: These tests outline drug use patterns over time, rather than just reflecting recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests come at a higher cost than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
