At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer extensive hair follicle testing services in Hill Country Village, Texas. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair-based diagnostics is complemented by a network of testing centers across the country. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed from the scalp or elsewhere. We provide drug analysis, alcohol/ETG detection, and more customized testing solutions.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug testing is becoming a standard method. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer this test over traditional urine tests. It is favored in workplaces with strict no-drug policies, among court orders, and probation cases. A primary advantage is its extended detection period—up to 90 days, using an overseen collection—making it highly difficult to manipulate. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within the last five days, urine remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a chronicled record of alcohol and different substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month timeframe of detection for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. By head hair, we are exclusively referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases entailed in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This comprises verifying that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched properly, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial expeditious inspection for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug utilization in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that exhibit presumptive positivity in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology to implement.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accredited ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, a longer window than urine tests offer.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical data: Displays a comprehensive pattern of usage over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate recent consumption: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in findings: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hill Country Village, TX, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing in several ways. Hair tests come with a long detection window, unparalleled by urine tests. This means that employers receive a comprehensive glimpse into an individual's drug use history, capturing a wider range of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
