In Huffman, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers superior hair follicle drug tests. If you require drug or alcohol testing, our centers nationwide, including all city locations, specialize in hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be utilized. Through hair tests, drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options can be detected.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are chosen by entities with strict drug policies, court mandates, and probation requirements due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days. However, for screening recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For cases involving EtG, supplemental tests, or more than 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and underarm hair).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug testing sample in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of the sample within a lab's system. This stage involves checking that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not inputted through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective way to exclude drug use in many samples, any positive results require confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that test positive during Screening must undergo a confirmatory test.

If a sample tests positive during the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at far lower concentration levels than in other methods (such as urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing particularly complex.

Validation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection span.
  • Challenge to falsify: Altering hair drug test results is exceptionally difficult, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Reveals historical usage: This method can illustrate a drug consumption trend over time, rather than only picking up on recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the actual test assesses hair strands, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The superior benefits of hair follicle testing over traditional urine methods resonate strongly in Huffman, TX. Unlike urine tests, hair tests maintain a consistent reliability over a longer detection window, identifying substances consumed within the past 90 days. This gives them a distinct edge in providing employers an extensive understanding of substance use.

Another significant advantage is the safeguard against falsification. Hair tests are notoriously difficult to tamper with compared to urine tests, enhancing the reliability of the results. For those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, this aspect is particularly valuable, ensuring a clear and unwavering stance against substance misuse.

Extended Detection Window

One of the profound benefits of hair follicle testing in Huffman, TX, is its extended detection window. With the capability of tracing drug use history up to 90 days, it provides an unparalleled breadth of insight into an individual’s substance habits. This comprehensive timeframe is invaluable for employers who wish to fully understand their candidates or employees’ behavior.

Beyond just pinpointing recent use, hair tests delve into the long-term habits of individuals. This extensive view aids in ensuring workplace safety and compliance with substance-free approaches, giving employers a holistic picture of potential risks.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Huffman, TX, hair follicle testing is celebrated for being a tamper-resistant method that considerably reduces adulteration risks. Unlike other tests, altering hair samples is almost impossible, delivering unparalleled confidence in the outcomes and making them more trustworthy for official or workplace purposes.

This robustness means hair tests can effectively withstand attempts to falsify the results, guaranteeing that what you see is the genuine evidence of use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
