Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle testing services in Iago, Texas. If you require a hair or alcohol drug test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in conducting hair tests, with centers across all cities Nationwide. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for a test. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized analyses.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers. The main advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, with an observed collection that prevents cheating. However, the urine test remains most precise for recent drug use, within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers, hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug usage. Collecting hair close to the scalp provides a detection span of nearly three months for alcohol and other substances. The collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For tests like EtG, any add-ons, or panels above 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair includes other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four pivotal phases in laboratory analysis of drug testing results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This encompasses ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and managing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although it is a cost-effective measure to exclude drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is essential for courtroom admissibility. Any samples that show a presumptive positive outcome in Screening warrant an additional confirmation step.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are extracted from the hair in significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to perform.

Verification of any positive screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designations and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection time.
  • Cheating is difficult: It is particularly challenging to cheat a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Historical usage data: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expensive: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence detected concentrations of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
