Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Idalou, Texas. If you are in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in such tests and have centers in cities nationwide capable of conducting them. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body is required for analysis. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other custom testing needs.

In recent years, the practice of drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are choosing hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often utilize hair follicle tests. The key advantage is its extended drug detection period—up to 90 days—gathered through an observed process that is very difficult to compromise. Nevertheless, for drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by incorporating biomarkers within the fibrous structure of the hair strand as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeline of up to around three months for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and conveniently shipped.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches from about 200 strands (approximate thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp is necessary to achieve 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional options, or screenings over 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement of the specimen is advised. Where scalp hair is unavailable, an equal sample of body hair can suffice. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the lab comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial inclusion of a sample into the laboratory system. This includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any other data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening refers to a quick preliminary test for drugs. Though Screening is an economical method for ruling out drug use in most instances, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold up in court. Any samples with potential positive results in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For presumptive positives identified in the Screening stage, additional hair is retrieved from the primary sample for the Extraction phase. In this step, the elimination of drugs from hair is pursued at much lower concentrations than with other testing measures (such as urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug testing is notably challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive findings is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is assessed in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests ascertain drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter period for detection.
  • Challenge to compromise: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly complex, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Chronological data availability: Offers insights into a substance use pattern over a timeframe, beyond just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to catch recent use: Drugs only become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug analyses are typically more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome discrepancies: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," such tests evaluate the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Idalou, TX, hair follicle tests stand out against urine tests for their superior substance detection and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests offer a broader detection window, spotting drug use up to 90 days prior.

The meticulous detection process employed by hair testing enhances accuracy. Furthermore, the challenge of tampering with hair samples is significantly higher, assuring employers of reliable data.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides a longer detection period in Idalou, TX, capturing up to 90 days of drug use history. This extended window offers a comprehensive look into an applicant or employee’s past use.

This makes hair testing invaluable for employers seeking thorough assessments of potential hires, ensuring candidates meet the organization's drug policy standards well before joining.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Idalou, TX, hair follicle tests are highly tamper-resistant, significantly lowering the possibility of sample manipulation. This is a critical aspect for employers who require trustworthy and unalterable results.

Compared to other testing methods, the complexity of attempting to alter a hair sample makes it a highly secure choice. Employers can rely on its accuracy and integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
