Located in Imperial, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers span cities Nationwide, ready to perform these tests. The crown of your head should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, or body hair can be used as a substitute. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific testing needs.

Recently, the preferred method for drug testing has increasingly been the hair follicle drug test. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for this over the standard urine test. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation supervisees are primary users. A significant advantage is its extended 90-day detection window, observed collection process, and near impossibility of tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests reign for substances used within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward and challenging to tamper with, while also being convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising nearly 200 hair strands (about the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is regarded as the optimal sample for examination and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When speaking of head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core actions in analyzing a drug test outcome in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of introducing a specimen into the laboratory's infrastructure. This comprises ensuring the sample was secured and transported correctly, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplementary data absent from an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening performs a rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening serves as a budget-friendly means to determine drug use for many samples, a positive result requires validation to be legally acceptable. Any samples that yield presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing notably complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug assessments can detect substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine assessments have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are nearly impossible to manipulate, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of substance use over an extended timeframe, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: A duration of approximately 5-7 days is required for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing usually incurs higher expenses compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests in Imperial, TX with its superior detection accuracy. By identifying substances over a broader timeframe, hair tests provide more reliable data, crucial in maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
