In Industry, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle testing services. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, turn to Accredited Drug Testing, experts in hair analysis, with facilities across all cities in the country to conduct such tests. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is essential in most instances. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly used hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer hair drug testing to traditional urine tests. It’s chosen by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. The major advantage is its ability to detect drug use over a longer span—up to 90 days—through a monitored process that's tough to evade. For detecting recent drug use within five days, the urine test remains the go-to for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommended 150mg sample is needed. It's advisable to weigh the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair is an alternative. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory drug test result processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample in the lab's system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry required beyond an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. While it’s cost-effective for ruling out substance use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Any samples suspected to be positive in Screening need further confirmation.

For samples suspected positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation, if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, making results more reliable.
  • Provides a historical perspective: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Typically called "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the strand of hair itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
