Complete hair follicle drug screenings are available in Ira, Texas through Accredited Drug Testing. Specializing in hair drug or alcohol testing, we provide services in various cities across the nation. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is generally required on the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, there's been an increased preference for hair follicle drug tests over urine tests. This change is driven by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts seeking stricter zero-tolerance policies or probation conditions. Hair tests offer a significant advantage with a detection period of up to 90 days, and since they are conducted under observation, they are hard to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained popularity as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The elongated history of alcohol and drug use can be unveiled by hair through entrapping biomarkers in the fibers of the expanding hair strand. Hair collected near the scalp provides up to about a 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to gather, somewhat tough to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

An optimal sample for analysis and verification is 100mg, obtained from a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It's important to utilize a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair shall be collected. The term head hair is specific to scalp hair. Body hair accounts for all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s database. This step checks if the specimen was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and input any extra information not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses a swift preliminary check for drug misuse. Screening is an economical method to exclude drug consumption in most samples; however, a favorable screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumably positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

For samples presumably positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial specimen for Extraction. This phase withdraws drugs from hair at a lower concentration compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening more challenging to execute.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens undergo necessary washing pre-confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated based on the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is arduous, enhancing the precision of the outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can outline a usage pattern over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: There's a 5-7 day timeframe before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
